Just an hour or so over the hill from Wellington, is the Wairarapa region, which has three wine sub-regions – Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton – that produce some of New Zealand’s most premium wine. The Ruamahanga river weaves its way through, connecting the sub-regions and creating terroir perfect for making world class wine.
We are on the back doorstep of the “coolest little capital” in the world – Wellington. We are their playground – and they are ours. When Wellingtonians want to escape the city, relax, unwind, sip wine and hang out in front of a roaring fire with friends, they come here, to their wine country.
Our region is home to some of New Zealand’s most well-known brands, and many of our wine producers export all around the world. We are most recognised for our food-friendly, well-structured and sophisticated, pinot noir. Our region is rich in history, tradition and legend. In other words, we have all the prerequisites for a great wine region…But we also have many more stories to tell…
You can’t talk about place without talking about our people. We have the most amazing people in our region. Talented. Innovative. Creative. Adventurous and full of character. Funnily enough, that is also how we describe our wine! Although we are most widely recognised for our pinot noir, especially in Martinborough, our region also reveals its creativity and innovation when it comes to some of the other exquisite varietals we love. From the classics of riesling and chardonnay through to the more exotic varieties of gruner veltliner and tempranillo, there is an element of exhilaration in the way we play with flavours, methods and techniques. From natural, organic and biodynamic to hi-tech yet traditional, our wines reflect some of the most forward–thinking and adventurous developments within the industry as a whole.
