Three sub-regions

Vines, visitors and houses enjoy close proximity in Martinborough, a compact, close-knit community of passionate wine makers and grape growers. The tree-lined square, heritage buildings, and relaxed country appeal underpin its boutique wine-making credentials.

Gladstone is a traditional farming region with expansive vineyards overlooking the banks of the Ruamahanga river. It’s near rural servicing Carterton, and Greytown, one of the prettiest small towns in the North Island with its Victorian buildings, tree-lined streets and fine shopping and food destinations.

Masterton, recently named New Zealand’s ‘most beautiful small city’ by the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Award programme, is the region’s rural servicing hub and largest civic and retail centre. Most wineries are gathered on its northern outskirts alongside premium olive groves, with smaller vineyards in the surrounding countryside.

Many regional vineyards welcome guests for tasting wines, although not all are open daily.  Please see our pages for details of which vineyards are open for tastings and/or food service.
