URLAR (pron. er-lar) means “The Earth” in Gaelic and brings together the passion of family, friendship and the environment to produce handcrafted, elegant wines with a purity of flavour.
Located in the Gladstone sub district of the Wairarapa URLAR’s single estate vineyard is planted in Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
Certified Organic by BioGro NZ, Urlar also practices biodynamic farming. A small herd of Highland cows play a fundamental role. Cow manure is used in many biodynamic applications such as Preparation 500 where cow manure is put into a cow horn and buried below ground to produce microorganisms that are later applied throughout the vineyard. The enriched soil then provides a healthy and robust environment for vine growth and fruit development.
Using the biodynamic farming and gardening calendar, the rhythmic influences of the sun, moon, planets and stars are recognised and worked where possible.
